Attorney General will eye practices

Dear Editor:
Several letters have been posted regarding my request to the Atlas Township Planning Commission that their Subcommittees conform to the Open Meetings Act. (‘Secret subcommittee? charges untrue, The Citizen, June 7, page 6). I appreciate the opportunity to respond to them.
I have read the law and do not believe the township is in conformance with the Open Meetings Act. To that end, I have requested that the Attorney General review the township’s practices and rule on whether they conform to the act.
As to my qualifications to becoming a board trustee, the fact that I have been willing to publicly inform residents of actions I do not either agree with or believe are unlawful is one of the strengths I will bring to the board. I have not been, and will not be, a ‘yes man.?
Was the township attorney’s letter an action meant to intimidate and silence not only me, but anyone else who would question the actions of our local government? As a township trustee, I will not support any measures that might discourage citizens from becoming involved with their government.
As for the libelous accusations that have been directed toward me (and probably will continue, given the track record of previous campaigns) ? I have to depend on the fact that many of our residents know me personally ? either because I fought to protect their property values, coached their children in soccer, or volunteered with them at numerous school and community events.
I believe that those of you who know me, know that I have the best interests of our community and schools at heart and will serve them with integrity and openness ? please tell your friends.
Sincerely,
Susan A. Arnold
