Cagers worked out the kinks they had during their scrimmage over Thanksgiving break and won their first game against Utica, 73-40.
“It was a good first game for us,” said Wolves Coach Dan Fife. “It reinforced things we needed to work on.”
It was the second year the boys have played against Utica and senior Brandon Pokley’s uncle, Gerry Kraemer, the Chieftains head coach.
“We wanted to do it for Pokley, his family and his uncle,” said Fife. “Utica is going through a rebuilding programs and we have a lot of returning kids.”
The two faced off to see how each program would fair. The Wolves showed their experience leading throughout the entire game.
The next two games will show what the boys are made of when they went to Flint Carman-Ainsworth on Tuesday and host Flint Northern on Friday.
“Carman has always been a good rival for us. They have a good basketball program,” said Fife.
“They have beat us a lot and we have beat them a lot. They beat us twice in the quarterfinals when it really counted.”
High scorers for Clarkston were Matt Kamieniecki, 27, Pokley, 14, and Tom Staton with seven points. Pokley shot two 3-point field goals and Kamieniecki shot one.
They will host Flint Northern in their first home game on Friday. Come out sporting the blue and gold when JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
