As a student attending Waterford Mott High School, Leslie Coffer joined the school’s Optimist Club as a means to just get out of the house.
‘Once I got started, I found it out it was very satisfying and I really enjoyed the club,? said Coffer, 18. ‘When I moved to Brandon as a junior I had to quit, because we did not have one here. So as a senior I decided to do something about that.?
So with the help of Nathan Odinga, Brandon High School English teacher, as an advisor, the Community Service Club was formed about a month ago’the student group will hopefully become part of the Optimist Club.
Coffer said the first meeting attracted about 19 students who will now be seeking projects in the community, from raking leaves to painting to general clean jobs around the area.
‘This group is for everyone,? said Leslie, who enlisted in the U.S. Army and will be heading to Ft. Bragg in June. ‘Students don’t have to be part of the National Honor Society or on the high school student council to join or do community service. Students can just come have fun and give something back to this community.?
Currently the group is seeking fleece to make blankets for cancer patients, with collection boxes located at the Brandon Township Library, 304 South St., Ortonville and the Brandon High School office.
‘These students are interested in performing various community service activities to benefit the local community,? said Odinga. ‘We are looking for opportunities and I am touching base with various community groups to see what we can do. This group is really motivated and actively looking for opportunities.?
