Bicentennial Quilters hope to raise $3,000 for library

Normally the Orion Township Library is all about books, but come Nov. 16, all eyes will be on the quilt.
That’s when the Lake Orion Bicentennial Quilters will raffle off their annual quilt to a lucky ticket holder, all to raise funds for the library.
‘Last year we raised $2,008, and we sold $2,000 tickets,? said Candy Plattenberger, co-chairperson of the group along with Cindy Walters.
Raffle tickets, priced at $1 each, will be on sale at the library now through the drawing in November. This year’s quilt is themed ‘These Are a Few of My Favorite Squares.?
‘We’ve been talking about (this theme) for a few years,? Plattenberger said. ‘We might ask for suggestions for next year’s.?
This year 20 women are working on the quilt, the group’s largest number yet.
‘We have two new people this year,? said Plattenberger. ‘This is the first year someone hasn’t had to do two squares.?
The women first met to pick up their fabric, and then they had four weeks to put their squares together. They met at the library in February to gather them, so that group member Susie Corker can start putting them together.
The quilt was stretched in March, and that is also when the quilting began.
Quilter Inez Brugioni returned to the group this year after a four-year absence, and Plattenberger said quite a few of the quilters have been doing this for many years.
‘Our goal this year is to raise $3,000,? she said.
The quilters have their choice of a day and an evening quilting group at the library, or they are welcome to work on their own time.
Plattenberger said people can buy as many raffle tickets as they wish.
‘One year, a guy bought only one ticket, and he was the last one to buy one,? she said. ‘And he won.?
