Despite not making it to the state finals as a team, several Brandon girls track team members will do the Blackhawks proud at the individual state finals.
The Blackhawks finished second in Division 2 regional action May 20., compiling 83.75 points. Kearsley qualified for the team state track meet May 28 by finishing first with 103 points. Saginaw finished third (70).
Heading up the list of Brandon girls qualifiers to the June 4 individual state meet are Sarah Bond, Kelly Wilson, and Savannah Stedman, each of whom qualified for the state meet in two events.
The top two finishers in each event at regionals automatically qualify for states, plus anyone who finishes above a minimum state standard for a given event.
Bond placed first in both the shot put (36?3?) and the discus (120?1?), while Stedman won the high jump (4?11?) and placed third in the discus (113?3?).
In addition, the 3200 meter relay team of Kayla Doan, Wilson, Jamie Hendershott, and Danie Ashford set a new school record with a time of 10:06, taking first in that event. Wilson also qualified for states in the 3200 meter run, finishing second with a time of 12:05.
Meanwhile, the Brandon boys track team finished in an eighth-place tie with Mt. Morris at regionals, with each school compiling 28 points.
Yale won the event with 92 points to advance to states, while Kearsley finished second (60) and Croswell-Lexington (56).
The Blackhawk boys had two competitors qualify for states, with Kyle Worden placing second in the discus with 133?10?, and Adam Hyde finishing second in the 300 meter hurdles (41.4).
