Brandon boys track drops below .500 in league with loss to Oxford

Brandon’s varsity boys track team was unable to stop visiting Oxford from earning its first Flint Metro League win of the season April 25.
The Wildcats defeated the Blackhawks 78-60, improving to 1-2 in the league and dropping Brandon’s league record to 1-2.
Brandon had a solid showing in field events, taking first place in three of five events. Kyle Worden won the discus in 131?1-1/2?, while Stewart Olney won the high jump in 5?6? and Jake Hardy captured the pole vault in 10?.
However, in distance events, the Wildcats proved to be too much to overcome, winning eight events to four for the Blackhawks.
Jawan Simpson won the 100 yard dash for the Blackhawks with a time of 11.5, while Nick Mackie took the 300 meter hurdles in 42.0.
In addition, the 800 meter relay team of Chris Ritchie, Steven Webber, Stefon Johnson and Simpson (1:39.8) and the 1600 meter relay team of Kevin Gibson, Hardy, Josh Tolan and Mackie (3:44.4) won their events.
The Blackhawks finished sixth in the New Lothrop Relays April 22 with 38 points. North Branch won the event with 84 points, while New Lothrop was second with 61 points.
Mackie notched the Blackhawks? lone first-place finish, winning the 300 hurdles in a time of 42.04. Brandon also finished second in the discus (227?4?) and third in the shot put (79?10-3/4?).
