Brandon cagers earn comeback win against Linden; Stedman leads team with 15 points

Brandon’s varsity girls team spotted Linden a two-point lead at halftime and put the clamps on the Eagles in the second half for a Flint Metro League victory.
The Blackhawks, who trailed the Eagles 15-13 at halftime, came back for a 36-25 victory in an Oct. 17 game at Brandon. The Blackhawks improved to 9-4 overall and 8-2 in the league with the victory.
Brandon is currently in a second-place tie with Swartz Creek in league play. Both teams are one game behind Fenton, which leads the Flint Metro with a 9-1 league mark.
Both teams started out slowly, but the Eagles? Andrea Hawland and Sam Wendt led the Eagles to a 7-4 lead after the first quarter. Senior Savannah Stedman sank the Blackhawks? only field goal of the game, while senior Maria Schmidtke hit two free throws to account for the Blackhawks? other points of the game.
The Blackhawks tried to keep pace with the Eagles in the second quarter, as sophomore Danielle Kwasiborski scored five points in the period, but the Eagles held on for the halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Stedman led the Blackhawks on their way back to control of the game, scoring eight of the team’s 12 third-quarter points as Brandon took a 25-23 lead at the end of the period.
The Blackhawks then shut down the Eagles in the fourth quarter, as two free throws by Linden junior Alex Miller accounted for the Eagles? only scoring of the period. Senior Meg Donnay scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter, including three free throws, to help seal the Blackhawks? victory.
Stedman led the Blackhawks in scoring with 15 points, while Mikki Nuccio added six points. Hawland led the Eagles with 10 points.
Five days earlier, the Blackhawks lost a 55-26 contest at the hands of host Flint Southwestern Academy.
The Blackhawks played evenly with the Knights for a period, with the teams tied at eight at the end of the first. Even though the Knights pulled ahead in the second, the Blackhawks kept their halftime deficit within single digits, 22-14.
In the third quarter, the Knights outscored the Blackhawks 20-6 to take firm command of the game, 42-20. Stedman scored 10 points for the Blackhawks in the loss.
