Brandon nine braves elements, splits doubleheader with Fenton

Brandon’s baseball team managed to withstand the rain enough to get in both ends of a doubleheader at Fenton May 17.
The Blackhawks, behind another strong outing from senior Roy Reynolds, shut out the Tigers 10-0 in the opener, but dropped the nightcap 10-4. Brandon’s record is now 17-14 overall and 6-4 in Flint Metro League play.
Reynolds went five innings in the opener and allowed only two hits. He also helped his cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Brandon also received offensive contributions from junior Mark Butzu, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and junior Derek Foyt, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, sophomore Andy Harding went 2-for-3 with two doubles in a losing cause for Brandon.
The Blackhawks also earned a split decision in the Kimball Tournament May 15 in Royal Oak. Brandon earned a 7-1 victory against Davison, but dropped a 7-3 contest against the host Knights.
Against the Cardinals, the Blackhawks ran wild, to the tune of 11 stolen bases. Butzu swiped three bases for Brandon, while Harding, Foyt, sophomore Andrew Spry, and sophomore Tony Kraydich had two steals apiece.
The Blackhawks scored four runs in the third inning on their way to the victory. Harding went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Foyt went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Senior Derrick Kratt turned in a strong effort for the Blackhawks, going seven innings while allowing one run on four hits. He fanned five Davison batters while walking three.
Against Kimball, the Blackhawks got off to a fast start, scoring two runs in the first inning. However, the Knights answered with two runs in the second inning and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Jeff Carroll took the loss for Brandon, going 4-2/3 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking three. Harding pitched the final 1-1/3 innings for the Blackhawks.
