Brandon’s Ubbing named regional golf Coach of Year

Brandon varsity boys golf coach John Ubbing said he is certainly pleased with his selection as a Regional and District Coach of the Year.
However, he also recognizes the real reason behind his selection.
‘It’s all about the kids? performance and them working hard,? he said. ‘I certainly thank them for that. Certainly, there’s some awards that go with that.?
Ubbing was one of five Division 2 Regional Coaches of the Year and one of 10 District Coaches of the Year, according to the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association’s Web site, www.migca.com.
The Blackhawks won the Flint Metro League championship for the first time in school history, and captured a Division 2 district championship before being eliminated from the state playoffs in regional action.
In addition, the Blackhawks had five representatives on the All-Flint Metro League team. Sophomores Ryan Bilkos and Josh Williams and senior Brian Jordan made first team all-league, while senior Tom Voyer was a second-team all-league pick and senior Will Hubbard earned honorable mention recognition.
Ubbing said the main difference between the district and regional selections was he knew about the district selection beforehand.
‘When we had our coaches? meeting the day of the district tournament (before the teams teed off), I was nominated by my peers and selected,? he said. ‘During regionals at Metamora, we went through a similar process, and three coaches were nominated. Quite honestly, I didn’t hear anything about it. I figured one of the other coaches got it, which was fine. I got a letter in the mail this past Monday (Dec. 12) about being selected for regional coach of the year.?
The MIGCA will honor Ubbing and the other selected coaches Feb. 10-12, 2006 at the 2006 Golf Coaches Winter Clinic in Grand Rapids.
