Bestselling children’s author Tim Smith stopped by Daniel Axford Elementary Tuesday to visit with students as part of ‘March is Reading Month.?
The Michigan author/illustrator and Traverse City resident is the creator of the popular ‘Buck Wilder? book series which teaches kids about fishing, hiking, camping and boating.
Included in the series are ‘Buck Wilder’s Small Fry Guide to Fishing,? ‘Buck Wilder’s Small Twig Hiking and Camping Guide,? and ‘Buck Wilder’s Little Skipper Boating Guide.?
Dressed in a fishing vest and hat ? just like his fictional protagonist Buck Wilder ? Smith talked about his writing career, how characters like Buck and ‘Fuzzy the Worm? were created, and his love of fishing that started it all.
Smith encouraged students to turn off their televisions, use their imaginations, try new things and discover where their talents lay.
His advice to students ? don’t worry if someone laughs at you, just keeping going, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes (that’s why erasers were invented).
