The Clarkston girls basketball team has cruised to a 5-0 start after a 40-31 victory over Troy on Sept. 19. The great start has the Wolves ranked No. 5 in the state.
‘It’s nice to be recognized,? Clarkston coach Tim Wasilk said. ‘The team has been playing well and maybe some of that has to do with our success last year. I don’t know if right now we are a top five team, but we are pretty good. We have a lot of work to do.?
The Wolves will be tested quickly with during the OAA I season, which started on Tuesday. Clarkston faced No. 1 ranked Auburn Hills Avondale, which finished too late for this edition of The Clarkston News.
In the Wolves victory over Troy, they relied on their defense, but the offense struggled a little.
‘Our defense was pretty good. We held them to 21 shots for the game, which is pretty good,? Wasilk said. ‘In the third quarter they only had two or three shots. We used a half-court trap against Troy and it worked out pretty well.
‘Offensively, we are getting good shots, but we haven’t been knocking them down. Hopefully in time our shots will come. We have only played five games so far. We have to get in game rhythm.?
Jennifer Johnston led Clarkston with 12 points. Chelsea Kouri added 10 points and three assists.
Kasha Krul led the Colts with 10 points and Michelle Maiuri finished with nine points.
The Wolves will continue conference play when they travel to Pontiac Northern on Thursday. Clarkston will then host West Bloomfield on Oct. 3. Wasilk said he expects the defense to continue to play well.
‘Defensively, no matter what, I expect us to be good every night,? Wasilk said. ‘We know where we are supposed to be…(offensively)it’s nice to be winning when we are not shooting the ball great.?
