Candidates sought for school board election; Stein chooses not to run

Two seats on the Oxford Community School Board are up for grabs this fall.
Vice President Carol Mitchell’s term is set to expire Dec. 31 and Trustee Mary Stein has decided not to seek reelection, thus, leaving two slots up for contention .
According to Joseph Rozell, Director of Elections for Oakland County, persons interested in running for one of the seats can stop by the Oakland County Clerk’s office to pick up and submit application materials.
Nominating petitions can also be obtained from Oxford and Addison township offices, however, they must be submitted to the county clerk’s office. They cannot be turned in at the township offices.
The filing deadline is Aug. 14 by 4 p.m. To file, candidates must submit an affidavit of identity and a petition, or $100 fee in lieu of the petition.
As to the reasons behind her departure, Stein said a board member’s ‘major responsibility is to set policy and not to insert (herself) into the administration of policy.?
Stein found it ‘especially difficult? to limit herself when she observed ‘something (she) might do differently.?
She also cited increased responsibility in her job at Oakland University as a motivator for her decision to leave the school board. She said that she is ‘the type of person who needs to be ‘full in? (yet) with . . . new responsibilities, this has been very challenging.?
Stein expressed thanks to the school board and the community and said she has been privileged ‘to serve the community in this role.
She assured her replacement that service on the school board ‘will be a wonderful experience!?
Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations Tim Loock praised Stein and said she has ‘been a great asset in terms of her knowledge of curriculum . . . (and has done) a great job representing the taxpayers and parents of the Oxford community.?
