Car show celebrates local history Aug. 4

Other car shows get more publicity than SCAMP Concours in the Park, but they can’t match the fun and ambience. Clarkston’s Depot Park provides a unique setting for some of the finest sports and classic cars. The car show, ice cream social, silent auction and live entertainment provide an evening of fun, information and insight.
The 19th annual event runs from 6-9 p.m on August 4 in Depot Park in downtown Clarkston. Hundreds of classic cars will be on display, several cruising in from Southern Motors; one of the newest additions to Clarkston.
The silent auction runs 6-7:30 p.m. There are items to suit every interest: limo rides, signed helmets and art. Sandwiches, hot dogs, beverages and ice cream will be available as well as mac and cheese from the Clarkston Union. Live entertainment provided by the band Chain Gang.
The event, organized by Waterford Hills Road Racing, Inc. (WHRRI), raises over $10,000 each year. Clarkston SCAMP has become a trackside name for the members and offers the drivers the opportunity to give back to the community.
Formed in 1976, the five-week Clarkston SCAMP program promotes social interaction, motor skills, self-image and academic skills for more than 300 area youths with mental, emotional or physical challenges from north Oakland County and nearby communities.
Again this year, SCAMPers judge their favorite cars and the vehicle owners win trophies. Car winners are announced throughout the event.
And then there are the cars?. Some standout entrants this year include the 1968 Shelby GT500E. This is one of the first cars that Unique Performance built with the assistance of Carol Shelby, replicating the original cars used in the movie ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds.? This is the same car that was featured on TLC’s “Overhaulin? and “Rides.?
Other featured cars include a 1962 Daimler SP250 (yes, it has a Hemi), a Marmon race car, a 1966 Pontiac GTO, a 1930 Ford Model A Sprint Race Car, a 1932 Ford street rod and a Spec Miata.
