Corunna— On Sept. 29 it was the battle of the undefeated as the Goodrich Martians (5-0) Varsity Football team traveled to Corunna (5-0) in a Flint Metro League match-up.
The teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, but a 28 point second quarter outburst by the Cavaliers was too much for the Martians overcome, as they dropped to 5-1 on the season in their first loss, 35-7.
“We blew coverage on receivers,” said Head Coach Tom Alward. “Corunna has some skilled athletes and all the credit to them. We had our chances but just did not take advantage of them.”
The Martians completed just one pass for nine yards, while the Cavaliers had 268 yards in the air. The Martians had 131 yards on 53 plays, while the Cavaliers rolled up 409 yards on 49 plays. Another key stat was the Martians ten penalties for 97 yards while the Cavaliers committed four penalties for 34 yards.
“The Cavaliers exposed some things during the game,” said Alward. “We had a good week of practice and made some corrections, if anything we learned from this loss.”
On Oct. 7, the Martians take on neighbor Blackhawks in the Battle for M-15.
