Dragon on the Lake, a community festival in Lake Orion celebrating art, history and the dragon, will feature a chalk painting festival in the municipal parking lot as part of the September event. The Orion Art Center invites artists, graphic artists, designers, and other talents to be a part of their Chalk Art Challenge on September 26 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Having a square at the chalk art festival is a great way to network, show off your talents, and have a great time. Artists choose what they will be drawing and work off of a reference photo.
Chalk art festivals are becoming more popular in the US and all over the world, but the chalk art tradition has been around a long time. In the 16th century, Italian artists used chalk on the plazas outside cathedrals and copied paintings of the Madonna by Raphael and his contemporaries. Such an artist became known as a ‘Madonnari? (painters of the Madonna) and a tradition was born.
This is a great opportunity to try your hand at chalk art. Chalk will be provided by the Orion Art Center for a nominal fee and a workshop will be offered by a professional to explain the process.
By the end of the Dragon on the Lake weekend, the Lake Orion Municipal lot will be full of masterpieces and may the best Lake Orion Madonnari win with three $100 prizes being offered to the best work.
