Cityhood, safety paths fail

Cityhood and safety paths were the big losers in Oxford’s election yesterday.
Village voters decided 333 to 244 they do not wish to continue the effort to become a city started back in 2003.
This means the 1.4-square-mile village will remain a home rule village and as such part of the township surrounding it.
Township and village voters came together to reject a proposed 10-year, 0.25-mill tax for safety paths by a margin of 1,686 to 1,164.
However, Oxford residents did vote 1,841 to 1,024 to approve a 0.8538-mill tax renewal to continue funding the township parks and recreation department for the next 10 years.
In Addison, voters approved both fire millage requests. The six-year, 0.75-mill tax for fire operations and ambulance service was approved 829 to 543.
An eight-year, 0.75-mill tax to fund the fire department’s capital needs got the okay by a margin of 737 to 620.
