Oxford Village Council voted unanimously to accept Councilman Michael Hamilton’s letter of resignation on July 28.
Hamilton kept the letter to one sentence, ‘I, Michael Hamilton, am resigning from the Village of Oxford council effective immediately.?
Village President Chris Bishop reported the council will not have anyone fill the vacancy.
‘With the village council election being Sept. 15, if we appointed someone they wouldn’t even start,? he explained.
They would need to appoint someone for the seat at the next meeting on August 25 and the following meeting would be September 22.
The resignation comes after Hamilton received misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and having an open container of alcohol in his 2007 Ford Expedition on July 18.
Hamilton plead not guilty to the charges at his arraignment on July 22. His pretrial date has been set for August 25.
Hamilton was among five candidates competing for three council seats in the September election.
