Politicians dream of being profiled in Time magazine. Actors dream of being mentioned in People magazine. Athletes dream of being featured in Sports Illustrated.
But the highlight of an elementary-age kid’s life is to make it into the hallowed pages of Highlights for Children magazine, thus assuring your name will be read in classrooms, school libraries and pediatricians? waiting rooms across the nation.
That dream is a reality for Hunter Hughes, a second-grader at Daniel Axford Elementary.
The 7-year-old’s name appears in the November issue as part of the ‘What Are You Thankful For?? section.
‘I thought it was really cool,? Hughes said. ‘When my dad gave it to me, I thought I was about to pee my pants.?
Hughes? answer to the Highlights question was simple ? ‘I am thankful for fruit.?
‘I like to eat fruit,? he said.
His favorite fruit is watermelon.
‘It’s really tasty and I like how it’s juicy,? Hughes said. ‘I could eat like five or 10 pieces of watermelon, but my mom and dad won’t let me have that much.?
When he’s not busy eating fruit, Hughes enjoys playing basketball and football. He’s currently part of a local flag football team called the Kalamazoo Hornets.
Hughes also enjoys fishing for largemouth bass and hunting for deer with his dad.
When he grows up, Hughes wants to be a spy. ‘I like being secret and stuff,? he said.
