Alyssa McTaggart is trying to help feed starving children in the Third World, but she can’t do it alone.
That’s why the Oxford High School freshman is asking friends, family, neighbors, businesses and strangers in the Oxford area to contribute money to her church youth group’s 30-Hour Famine Project April 15-16.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, McTaggart along with 300 to 500 other high school age members of the Kensington Community Church in Troy will fast for 30 consecutive hours to raise money for starving Third World children.
From now until the event, McTaggart and her fellow fasters are collecting donations. Every $30 raised feeds a starving child for one month. Every $360 raised feeds a child for a year.
As a result of a recently approved federal grant, each dollar collected for the famine project will be multiplied by seven, according to McTaggart. So thanks to Uncle Sam, that $360 to feed one child for one year will turn into $2,520 to feed seven children for a year.
McTaggart said she and her fellow fasters will spend the night of April 15 hanging out, playing games, praying and gaining a better understanding of what it’s like to live with hunger.
Then on the morning of April 16, they will all head down to Detroit to work on various service projects designed to help needy individuals in the inner city.
Oxford area residents wishing to contribute money to the 30-Hour Famine Project should make their checks payable to ‘World Vision? and mail them to McTaggart at 920 Abingdon Drive, Oxford, MI 48371. McTaggart is asking those who wish to contribute to mail their donations by April 10.
