Donors give gift of life

About 70 donors were expected to give the gift of life at the American Red Cross blood drive, Dec. 17, at Independence Township Fire Station number one.
‘It’s been nice and steady all day,? said Ron Savage, Clarkston Area Lions Club volunteer. ‘We’re a little bit ahead of goal at the moment.?
About 35 donors gave blood by about 1:30 p.m., Savage said.
“This is something I’ve been doing since graduating high school (in 2006),” said donor Justin Clarke of Waterford. “I donate because I don’t need it all, and to get the free cookies.”
“Whenever it comes here, I give blood,” said Kenneth King of Clarkston, 74, a donor for many years. “There’s a great need for it in the community and in the world.”
Volunteers, including Savage and Elizabeth Hawthorne, Miss Oakland County 2010, helped out all day.
“I can’t donate ? my iron is too low, so I volunteer,” Hawthorne said. “It’s going great. It’s nice to help out.”
“It looks like it’s going very well ? it always does,” said Robert Cesario, Independence Township Fire Department. “There’s never a lack of support from the community.”
