Dr. Matt Bahu knew since boyhood he was going to be a doctor. An ACL injury on Wayne State’s varsity football team helped him pick his specialty.
‘That was my first experience with orthopedic surgery,? said Bahu, sports medicine surgeon with Orthopedic Specialists of Oakland County.
Growing up in Livonia, he was inspired to become a doctor by his older brothers Anton, Sam, and Bill.
‘I was about 6 years old,? Matt said. ‘I idolized my brothers. I was into science and helping people, and I was always into sports.?
All four brothers practice in the southeast Michigan area.
‘With so many doctors named Bahu, there has been some confusion for patients, but it’s a great experience,? Matt said. ‘It’s a great opportunity.?
He earned his medical degree at Wayne State University School Of Medicine, and served his orthopedic residency at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint.
‘Flint was a phenomenal experience, the best kept secret in orthopedics,? he said. ‘It’s an outstanding program.?
He successfully applied for a Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at Columbia University, New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.
The fellowship experience in New York City honed his skills working with the shoulder, including rotator cuff disease, arthritis, and joint replacement.
He collaborated in groundbreaking research, which he will present to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and performed surgery with world-renowned surgeons.
‘It’s one of the oldest and well known fellowships in the world,? he said. ‘I come from a smaller community, but they gave me the same shot they gave everyone else. Hopefully, I can live up to their expectations.?
With Dr. Safa Kassab of Orthopedic Specialists of Oakland County, 6060 Dixie Highway, Suite F, in Independence Township, and 44555 Woodward, Suite 105, in Pontiac, Dr. Bahu treats a wide range of general orthopedic conditions, and performs shoulder, elbow, and sports surgery.
‘My goal is to treat the community’s shoulders,? he said.
