Goodrich— On Tuesday night the Goodrich Maritan Boys Varsity Soccer team fell in the home opener 4-1 to the visiting Frankenmuth Eagles in the home opener.
The Martians single tally was from GHS Freshman #4 Tyler Collins and Player of the Game was GHS #17 Calvin Koczara.
“Early in the season we try to figure out who goes where like a big chess board and tonight we saw some very strong positive play out of many players,” said Evan Huizenga, GHS Boys Soccer Coach, starting his 19th season at the helm.
“The scoreboard did not reflect what I am taking away from this game with some very good strengths and positives out of some players.”
“We have a chance to really sort some things out this week and we are not afraid to put in some work,” he said. “We will stare down that uphill battle and work to fight back into the win column. Lots to do. I am excited that our leadership is showing well early on.”
Coach Huizenga started coaching the Martian Boys Team in 2006 which included a state championship in 2008. Remarkably from 2006-2018 the Martian Boys won every GAC championship for a total of 13. Then in 2019, 20 and 2022 they won Flint Metro League titles. The Martians also won 10 district championships. Huizenga’s overall record with the boys team is currently 273-88-27. Overall with both girls and boys soccer at Goodrich is 415-191-44.
