A trial date of March 5 has been set for former Oxford Village Deputy Clerk Marion Patricia Paad, who’s facing five felony counts of embezzlement by public official over $50.
Paad is accused of embezzling approximately $3,300 in village tax funds paid by three property owners in 2006 along with $308 in drug forfeiture funds and $275 in Preliminary Breath Test fees from the village police in Dec. 2010. She allegedly repaid the tax funds in 2007 with money borrowed from village Councilwoman Maureen Helmuth, who was employed as the deputy treasurer at the time.
Paad was originally supposed to be tried back in July, however, Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren dismissed all of the charges without prejudice because the prosecutor was unable to begin the trial on the scheduled day due to a heavy caseload.
The charges against Paad were later reissued and she was arraigned again in early November. If convicted, Paad could be made to pay restitution to the village including $20,594 in 2010 tax money, which the village claims it discovered missing during an internal investigation earlier this year.
Even though she hasn’t been criminally charged for any of 2010 missing money, the court could find Paad liable for it if the village has the documentation.
