The Goodrich baseball team outhit Flint Kearsley 9-3 in the first round of district action May 31 at Kearsley.
However, Kearsley put their hits together at the right time. As a result, they eliminated the Martians from district action with a 3-2 win, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an infield ground ball.
Goodrich closed its season with an overall record of 30-7, including a 16-0 record in Genesee Area Conference Red Division competition.
Despite their nine hits, the Martians stranded 10 runners in the game, and committed three errors to none for Kearsley.
‘They just outplayed us today,? Goodrich coach Bob Foreback said.
Kearsley scored one run each in the second and fourth innings before Goodrich tied things up with two runs in the top of the fifth, setting up the seventh-inning finish.
Nick Wesener was the losing pitcher for the Martians. Basil Wilson led the Goodrich offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Despite the loss, Foreback said it does not take away from the accomplishments of this year’s Martian squad.
‘I’m always a little sad to see the seniors leave, but they had a great career and a great season,? he said. ‘This group was the first Goodrich team to go undefeated in the league, and that is something to be proud of.?
