Fenton overtakes Brandon cagers to retain league lead

During the first few minutes of Brandon’s varsity girls basketball game against Fenton Oct. 3, it looked like the Blackhawks could pull off a win against the league-leading Tigers.
However, the Tigers overcame an early 7-0 deficit and defeated the Blackhawks 44-33 in a key Flint Metro League matchup Oct. 3 at Brandon. The Tigers cemented their hold on first place in the league, improving to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the league.
Meanwhile, Brandon dropped to two games back of the Tigers in the league race, as their record is now 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.
After the Blackhawks jumped out to the early lead, the Tigers came clawing back and wound up tying the Blackhawks at eight at the end of the first period.
The Tigers asserted command of the game with an 18-7 run in the second quarter, putting Fenton ahead 26-15 at the end of the first half.
‘They got 14 points from putbacks off of offensive rebounds,? Brandon coach Bryan Ray said. ‘They beat us on the boards.?
Although the Blackhawks would mount a furious comeback in the third quarter, trimming the Fenton lead to 31-29 at the end of the period, the Tigers stepped it up in the fourth quarter for the win.
‘We had open shots in the fourth quarter,? Ray said. ‘We had some good looks at some threes, and we missed a couple of layups. They had a couple of kids have career nights, and that was the difference in the game.?
Savannah Stedman accounted for a vast majority of the Blackhawks? offense, scoring 19 points. No other Brandon player had more than four points.
