Goodrich – Bouyed fish traps set on the Goodrich Mill Pond this week garnered attention.
At the request of the Rev. Jeff Stonerock, who lives along the mill pond, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division conducted a general fish survey.
Sediment coming from upstream collecting in the mill pond was the bad news, said MDNR Fisheries Management Biologist Joe Leonardi.
‘On the good side, the northern pike fishery looks excellent with good numbers of large fish as well as signs of natural reproduction.
Species caught were identified as black crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, brown trout, pumpkinseed, white sucker, and yellow perch, all keeper size except for black crappie, bluegill, and brown trout.
‘The brown trout we collected are ones that have drifted down from when they were stocked by the DNR in April this spring? in Atlas Township’s Kearsley Creek, said Leonardi, who doesn’t expect the fish to survive the mill pond’s summer temperatures.
‘They will quickly become food for the bass and pike,? he said.
A complete analysis of the fish survey will be written this winter after age-growth analysis data is collected, Leonardi said.
