The Oxford Early Learning Center’s Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) summer camp is now available for free this year, due to an additional $3,600 per pupil funding being passed down by the state, which hadn’t been given in the summer before according to OELC Director Washea Jackson.
‘We’re thrilled about it,? Jackson said. ‘This is a great initiative for students who have not been in preschool to have the jump start for kindergarten.?
The camp will run Monday through Fridayfrom 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include free breakfast, lunch and snacks for the children. There will also be certified teachers, field trips and developmentally appropriate curriculum and assessments, and a reading screener to determine where children are in order to support them for kindergarten, according to Jackson.
‘I think it’s awesome too for parents that are working because they get to bring their children for five-days a week for free and know they are not only going to summer camp, but a quality camp and we can be flexible with their schedule,? she added. ‘I think it has a lot of added benefits that the regular school year hasn’t provided in supporting families in the community or anywhere in Oakland County.?
