Garage sale for single mom fighting cancer

Family and friends are rallying around a single mother from Oxford battling cancer by hosting a three-day garage sale this week to help pay her medical and living expenses.
‘This will be the first of many fund-raisers,? said Andy Kitchner, of Oxford, one of the sale’s organizers.
Shoppers looking to net a great deal and contribute to a worthy cause are encouraged to stop at 2912 Baldwin Rd. ? just northwest of the Baldwin-Waldon intersection ? between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Thursday, Sept. 11 through Saturday, Sept. 13.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit Linda Richman, a village resident who’s spent the past four years courageously battling Stage 4 lung cancer.
As of this past spring, Richman’s been unable to work due to her need for intense chemotherapy treatments to fight off a tumor in her liver.
A single mother with four sons, Richman must still care for her two younger boys, Brennan, a seventh-grader at Oxford Middle School, and Nate, an eighth-grader at OMS.
On top of their normal living expenses, which everyone knows aren’t going down these days, Richman must also contend with medical expenses not covered by her health insurance such as prescription medications.
‘One pill is $100,? Kitchner said. ‘There’s one injection that she’s supposed to get every few weeks, but it’s $1,200. Because she doesn’t have the coverage, she’s got to do blood transfusions instead of getting her shot.?
To those who have never had the true pleasure of meeting Richman, Kitchner described her as ‘one of those people that just has the biggest heart.?
‘She would do anything for you,? Kitchner said. ‘She’s a strong woman, always positive.?
Loads of eager shoppers and a solid group of hard-working volunteers will be needed to make this fund-raiser a success, according to Kitchner.
‘What we need are people, especially Thursday and Friday, who can come out and help us run things,? she said.
Those interested in volunteering can contact Kitchner at (248) 830-0946 or Rena Page at (248) 693-8853 or (248) 505-7786.
Monetary contributions can be sent to her son Aaron Richman at 50 Mechanic St., Oxford, MI 48371.
