Helen L. Smith, American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Chairman of Unit 108, Oxford, announced today that candidates interested in attending the 64th session of American Legion Girls State, June 20-27 at Michigan State University, should contact high school counselor Lewis Wilson.
Since its beginning in 1941, approximately 24,000 young women of Michigan have participated in this practical experience in self-government. The program is based on Michigan State government at city, county and state levels. It emphasizes the impact of government in today’s world.
“The duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship are taught to awaken a sincere conviction that a citizenry that is well informed will be a citizenry that will participate in the protection, preservation and revitalization of our American Democratic system,” Smith said.
Young women who will complete their junior year in high school in 2004 are eligible to apply. Outstanding achievement in school and community are carefully considered.
Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Girls State delegates are eligible to apply for a Samsung Scholarship, available only to those participating in the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.
