After three straight wins on the season, Girls? Tennis suffered their first loss to Farmington on Monday night in a 7-1 score.
‘They were pretty down that they lost, but I have to keep reminding them we are a first year team and we’re playing pretty established teams,? said Head Coach Gayle Bailey. But I am happy they have that drive to win.?
The Wildcats single win came from number one single Katherine LaBombard.
‘Despite the seven losses I was really pleased with my number one single that beat their number one single,? added Bailey. ‘She is on fire.?
The girls also took second place out of six at the April 27 Southfield Lathrop Invitational, which included Southfield Lathrop, Cabrini, Avondale, Dearborn and Lamphere.
While most of the girls won their first round it wasn’t enough to take the win overall.
‘Avondale took first. That’s who we were gunning for, but they’re a good team,? Bailey said. ‘My girls hung in there and I have nothing constructive to say because they did great, we got second place.?
Bailey noted that her one single (LaBombard) and two single (Mackenzie Prey) won their division and got to take home a medal.
‘We were really pleased,? she said.
Despite impending bad weather, the girls were able to complete all their matches against Pontiac on April 23 for a 6-2 win. Bailey said weather is something that’s played havoc on them all season long.
‘Because we are having to do rematches back to back, we’re not really getting a chance to practice,? she said. ‘I would love to get a practice in after playing different schools so I can help tweak their game but we can’t even do that.?
Regardless of the weather though, Bailey said she proud.
‘We’re in mid season with a 3-1 record, and runners up in our first invitational,? she said. ‘We’re doing great.?
The girls next match will be home at Oxford High School on May 2 starting at 4 p.m.
