Steve Koslowski started a charity golf tournament a few years ago driven by a desire to contribute to the building of a cafeteria at a Jamaica orphanage.
With the cafeteria built, the Brandon Township resident is now focusing on roof repairs for the Swift-Purscell Boys Home, but has also turned his attention to the needs of children here at home.
Koslowski recently announced his intention to donate to Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance half of the proceeds from the fourth annual Koz’s Fun Fish Charity Golf Outing, planned for May 16 at the Goodrich Country Club.
‘It might go for kids to play sports in town or for kids to attend camp,? said Koslowski. ‘I have enjoyed fundraising and would like to keep half the money in my local town.?
During the past three years, the golf outing has raised $28,000 for the boys? home. Koslowski hopes the event raises at least $9,000 this year, with half for BGYA.
BGYA Boardmember Ed Breslin said any money donated by Koslowski will be used for various scholarship programs for low-income children who otherwise would be unable to attend skill-building camps, classes, or sports clinics. The money will not be used for varsity sports, but could be used in Brandon recreation programs for example.
‘It will cover registrations fees and we will use the money until it’s gone and help as many kids as we can,? said Breslin. ‘We are just tickled to help as many kids as we can and any kind of support like this is so influential in getting kids involved. Without it, they may be sitting out and wishing they had something to do.?
Koslowski considered not having the golf outing this year due to the economy.
‘It’s hard to ask someone to give you money, but the kids are in need now more than ever,? he said. ‘God knows we need help in our town. I look forward to working with BGYA for the kids and seeing what will be done with the money here to help our local kids.?
Unlimited openings are currently available for the golf outing, which has a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration deadline is May 9. Cost is $50 for members with a cart, $60 for members without a cart, and $80 for non-members. The price includes 18 holes, a continental breakfast, hot dog at the turn, and lunch. Skins, pins, mulligans, raffles and 50/50 will be available. Prizes include a set of adirondack chairs painted by Koslowski and a week stay in Jamaica at the Garden Cottage at Pemoana. Hole sponsors and volunteers are needed.
