The Oxford Varsity Golf team concluded its season on Oct. 9 when they finished 11th out of 14 teams during regionals at the Lapeer Country Club. Oxford Senior Bryan Mattack shot an 82, the best score by an Oxford golfer.
“No one shot extremely well for us,” said coach Dan Lovell.
The Wildcats started off the 2003 season by losing a couple of key meets with close scores, but came on strong later in the season to finish with a dual meet record of 4-2, good enough for fourth place in the league behind Lapeer West, Fenton and Linden.
Winning the regional tournament was Flint Powers Catholic, shooting an outstanding 299 to win. The top three schools, including Powers Catholic, Flint Kersley, and Lapeer West, qualified for states.
This will be the last season for several Oxford seniors, including Bryan Mattack, Scott Hyder, Aaron Bruce, Joe Fedorinchik, Mike Morse and others. With the majority of the varsity team being seniors, fans can expect to see a completely different look next season.
The Wildcats, though not as successful as last season, came out in league standings 4-2, a better record than many expected. Many golfers had exceptional seasons, including Mattack, Fedorinchik, Bruce, Hyder and Morse, who all played in the regional tournament for Oxford. These players, who enjoyed their last season at Oxford, will take with them many memories, and leave behind big shoes to fill.
