Holly — The Goodrich Boys Varsity Bowling team improved to 5-2 on the season in the Flint Metro League after a 22-8 win over Fenton Jan. 27 at Holly Lanes.
The Martians started out strong, winning the first baker game (five bowlers bowling two frames each) 248-189 before dropping the second baker game 202-190. Overall, the Martians took the baker totals, 438-391.
“Today was a hard-fought victory,” said Jeff Acton, second-year coach. “Fenton is a strong team full of an experienced senior class. Holly Lanes has been a tough house for us to score well at, but our boys battled all day.”
“It was a much-earned and deserved victory,” added senior Tyler Ledbetter. “Making our way back to the top.”
In the individual portion of the match, Goodrich took three points in the first game with junior Tegan Gross leading the way with a 246 and senior Noah Colgan shooting 236.
“The boys still had to battle in the second individual game to win the match, though,” Acton said.
Gross, Ledbetter and junior Weston Birmingham stepped up and won their matches to help the Martians seal overall totals.
“Spare shooting proves time and time again to be the major factor in deciding who wins these matches,” said Acton. “We were able to edge out the Fenton boys in this category. As the season comes to an end, we will continue to work on our spare shooting and learning to make the correct adjustments on the lanes. We will use these hard-earned victories to help propel us at regionals and, hopefully, states.”
The Martians next play Brandon today at 1 p.m. and Clio on Monday at 6 p.m., both matches back at Holly Lanes.
