Goodrich- By a 3-1 vote at the June 8 village council meeting Shannon McCafferty was appointed as a new member, replacing Tim Brannon who resigned last month for personal reasons. Pete Morey, Mark Baldwin and Rick Horton voted yes. Jacob Vick voted no. She will serve until December 2016.
McCafferty has lived in the village for 15 years and was a native of Sterling Heights. She attended Grand Valley State University before earning an associate of arts degree in accounting and a bachelor of business administration degree from Baker College. Her employment history includes accounting work at a Bloomfield Hills property management company, internet retailer and the Flushing Golf and Country Club. For the past five years, she’s been employed by the United States Department of Defense as a budget accountant.
The Hatch Act governs the political activity of government employees, like McCafferty, at the federal, state and local levels. Under the act, federal employees are prohibited from engaging in partisan political campaigns or partisan political management. However, since the village council is non-partisan, she is allowed to hold office.
For the past six months McCafferty has also served on the village planning commission.
‘I’m an independent thinker and not swayed by opinion,? said McCafferty. ‘Bring me the facts and that’s how I base my decisions. I think every argument deserves some solution rather than making a mockery of that person. I have no personal agenda and after living here many years it’s time to get involved with the community and the governing process.?
‘It used to be people waved at you on the streets in Goodrich. Basically, life was more civil here,? she said.
‘But today it’s falling apart and I want to drop that negative stigma and grow this community the way it was meant. My thing is accounting and that’s what I’m bringing to the table. The meetings are too divided right now and we need to be productive. There needs to be a voice of reason.?
