Goodrich bowling set to take aim at season with improved numbers

Kelly Bretzloff remembers when the turnout for the Goodrich bowling team was so low, they couldn’t field a full girls team.
Now, Bretzloff, the Martians? varsity bowling coach, said the team has full-fledged tryouts, and the Martians have to limit the number of roster spots on both the boys and girls bowling teams.
This year’s tryouts were scheduled between 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 and 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at Grand Blanc Lanes, 5301 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc.
Bretzloff said it was hard getting Goodrich students interested in the sport when the club first began in 2002.
‘In the first year, we were just a little club with no girls team ? we had only two girls sign up, and that wasn’t enough for a full team.,? she said. ‘We had seven boys sign up that year. Now, the league (Genesee Area Conference) will only allow 10 boys and 10 girls on the team, per district rules.?
Last year, the Martian girls finished fourth in the conference, while the boys finished fifth. The Martians are currently a Division 2 team in bowling as recognized by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
