Flushing — After spliting the season series 1-1, the third game was the charm as the Goodrich Boys Varsity basketball team defeated Lake Fenton 57-52 for the Flint Metro League crown on Feb. 23 at Flushing.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an 18-13 lead over the Martians (17-5) in the first quarter of Then the Martian defense woke up and stymied the Blue Devils to just 3-of-13 shooting in the second quarter en route to the championship.
Parker LePla led the Martians with 14 points while Raether netted 13 points. Brandon Basset had 15 points for the Blue Devils with Coleson Lessner had 14 points and Ashton Hunter followed with 13 points.
“People don’t realize how tough the Flint Metro League is,” said Coach Gary Barns, after the game. “There are very few easy nights. It’s been a work in progress, this team is very young and getting better. We have sophomores out there and are still learning. Remember we lost eight seniors last year, coaching is mentoring and teaching we are still moving forward.”
“This was a great win, but there’s no time to celebrate, it’s March Madness now, if you stub your toe, it’s time to go home and play golf for the summer,” he said.
