Fenton — The Fenton Tigers had no answers for a dominate Goodrich Martian ground game on Saturday night tallying 386 yards on 56 carries to take home a Metro League Championship 42-3 at Fenton High School.
The 2022 Metro League champion Martians (7-1) had the ball six times, and scored touchdowns on all six drives.
GHS #24 Jakoby Lagat had three TDs and the sole first-quarter score of the game from 20 yards out, the second quarter from nine yards out and scored one with just 10 seconds left in the half from four yards out.
“We played very well and scored on every possession,” said Head CoachTom Alward. “We never punted. We showed up to play and anytime you can beat Fenton it’s a special year.
The Tigers earned a little momentum on their previous possession when they drove 41 yards in 10 plays, setting up a 41-yard field goal by Keegan McArdle with 6:06 left in the first half. That closed the Goodrich lead to 14-3. Then, it looked like the defense was going to force a fourth-down punt on Goodrich’s next possession. However, the Martians faked the punt and got four yards on a fourth-and-2 play from Colton Roe. Eight plays later, came Lagat’s third TD. Goodrich was up 21-3 at halftime.
In the second half, three different players scored for Goodrich. Quarterback Tanner Mazich scored from five yards out, Colton Burnett scored from 20 yards out and Thomas Niles scored from 10 yards out.
The closest Fenton came to scoring in the second half came when they moved the ball to the Goodrich 15 late in the fourth quarter. The big play the set that up was a 32-yard run by Noah Sheil. However, an incomplete pass, two plays that lost yards and the Tigers were now facing a fourth-and-17 from the 22. The drive ended on downs with an incomplete pass.
