Fenton — On Jan. 22 the Goodrich Martian Varsity Wrestling team competed in a dual meet with Owosso and Fenton at Fenton High School in Flint Metro League competition. The Martians were defeated by Fenton 49-15 and victorious over Owosso 52-23. The Martians improved to 8-9 overall and 7-4 in the Flint Metro League.
“As much as the score says we got our butts whooped there was some tough wrestling within the dual,” said Head Coach Isaac Jewell. “You always want to make sure that you are ticking in the right direction and at the end of the day, it’s not so much what you do on the mat that’s important. It’s what you are doing off the mat that can really set things apart in a good way or bad. Consistency is key, being accountable, responsible, staying resilient, they’re all factors. Whether it’s in a duel or it’s throughout the season.”
Coach Jewell recognized some outstanding Martian wrestlers after Wednesday’s dual meet.
GHS Jr. Jonathan Golec, 175 pounds is returning state placer and is 28-3 this season.
“Golec is having his best year,” said Jewell. “We’re looking for him to make a title run.
GHS Sr. James Mahon is 21-1 this season and going for his third state title.
GHS Soph. Parker Stayton is currently 18-7.
“Stayton has really turned the corner at the best time of the year as the regular season dies down heading into the postseason. Lots of passion from him everyday,” he said.
“As far as the season goes, I don’t think we are done yet, you have to be able to put it together at the right time and these guys know that,” said Jewell. “You just get better every day and focus on staying in the present. Let the winning figure itself out.”
