Goodrich grapplers take down opponents at Caro

Goodrich’s wrestling team was well-represented on the leader board at the27th annual Caro Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Dec. 10.
The Martians finished second among 13 teams competing in the tourney, compiling 105 points to edge out third-place Perry (102). The host Tigers won the tournament with 173.5 points.
A total of 11 Martians placed in the tourney, led by sophomore Mark Weber, who won the 119-lb. bracket with a 3-0 record on the day.
Weber defeated Steven Light of St. Clair Shores by a 6-1 decision in the championship bout. After receiving a bye in the first round, Weber pinned Okemos? Cory Kramer in 55 seconds and earned a 16-3 major decision against Bridgeport’s Ernie Garza to land in the title match.
Two other Martians, freshman David Garr (112) and senior Dustin Brooks (145) finished second in their weight classes, with each going 2-1 on the day.
Garr received a first-round bye, then pinned Vassar’s Justin Muntz in 1:39 and earned an 18-4 major decision against Shane DuRussel of Croswell-Lexington. Garr then lost a 7-3 decision to Caro’s Taylor Dennis in the title match.
Brooks also received a first-round bye before pinning Caro’s Adam Parsons in 5:03 and Perry’s Andrew Ash in 5:30. Standish Sterling’s Dewe Milan then pinned Brooks in 3:23 to win the 145-lb. championship.
Goodrich freshman C.C. Weber took third place in the 103-lb. class by compiling a 2-1 record at the tourney. Weber pinned Perry’s Justin Dunham in 5:47 before Standish Sterling’s Jacob Brown pinned her in 2:42. Weber then bounced back to defeat St. Clair Shores? Nick Marino by a 6-3 decision in the third-place bout.
Three Martians earned fourth-place finishes: Grant Overcashier (135), Nick Gatchell (140) and Kyler Elsworth (160). Drew Weil (130) and Kyle March (189) placed fifth, while Brad Armstrong (152) and Tim Burr (171) finished sixth.
Two days earlier, the Martians hosted a quad meet and split their two matchups, losing 53-15 to Flint Kearsley before defeating Lapeer West 40-30.
Against Kearsley, Goodrich was held scoreless in the first five matches, before Garr broke through by pinning Alan McGlone in 3:14. Mark Weber (119) pinned Justin Merrow in 2:17, while Kirk Britton (125) earned the Martians? other victory of the match by defeating Justin McDermitt 6-4.
The Martians fared much better against Lapeer West, winning eight of 14 matches. Four Martian wrestlers ? Justin Seaford (275), Mark Weber (119), Britton (125) and Weil (130) won by pinfall, while March (189), C.C. Weber (103) and Gatchell (140) won by decision.
In addition, Garr (112) won by void for the Martians.
