It was a case of too little, too late for the Goodrich hockey team.
After being shut out the previous two periods in their Jan. 12 game against visiting Marysville, the Martians scored three goals in the third period. However, Marysville staked out a three-goal lead on their way to a 6-3 win.
Marysville took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Jack Butchbach, and added goals in the second period by Jake Hartig and Tristan Collingwood to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the second period.
The Martians scored their first goal with 8:53 left in the third, as Matt Hill connected on an assist from Max Hawkins. However, Marysville answered with two more goals to put the game out of reach, as Adam Nixon and Zach Plechaty connected for the visitors.
Hill scored his second goal of the game with 4:25 left on assists from Brian Van Kuren and Derek Powers, and Lance Keene capped off the Goodrich scoring on an assist from Ryan Mortimer.
Marysville’s Nixon capped off the game’s scoring with 50.7 seconds left to provide the final margin of victory.
The Martians received a bit of bad news when they learned their Jan. 2 contest against Lapeer West, which ended tied at four, would not be reviewed.
In that game, West’s Phil Hill scored a last-second goal. Goodrich coach Doug Van Kuren contended the buzzer had sounded before the shot was fired, but it was all for naught.
‘Even though I have video proof and a scorekeepr that saw it, you can’t overrule the referee’s decision,? Van Kuren said.
The Martians return to action Wednesday, Jan. 21 when they host Avondale at 6 p.m.
