Goodrich icers split pair of close contests against Powers, Freeland

Goodrich’s hockey team fell victim to a third-period comeback by Flint Powers in their Jan. 7 game.
The Chargers scored two goals in the final frame to overcome a 3-2 deficit and defeat the Martians 4-3.
After Powers took a 1-0 lead with 8:05 left in the first period, the Martians tied things up with 3:56 left in the period, as Tom Ferreri scored on an assist from Reece Geml.
The two teams traded goals again in the second period, with Powers taking a 2-1 lead with 5:07 left in the period before Goodrich’s Steven Tangney tied the contest at two with just eight seconds left in the second on assists from Brennen Benedict and Darin Kern.
Goodrich took a 3-2 lead with 11:20 left in the third period, as Max Hawkins connected on an assist from Kern. The Chargers then scored two goals within 14 seconds of one another, the first coming with 7:51 left in the third period.
The third period made all the difference for the Martians in their Jan. 4 game against host Freeland.
Trailing 4-3 heading into that period, the Martians scored three goals in the third to capture a 6-4 victory against the Falcons. Mitch Milke notched a hat trick for the Martians and added one assist, while Hawkins chipped in with a goal and two assists.
