Flushing — The Lady Martians used some smothering defense, as the Goodrich girls basketball team topped Flushing 44-26 to win the Flint Metro League championship and remain undefeated on the season at 21-0 and 10-0 on Feb. 23 at Flushing.
The Martians held Flushing to just two points in the third quarter coupled with Kayla Hairston 14 points and two steals; Ella Place eight points and Alexis Kosmowski seven points and four rebounds.
“Considering we’re coming off a great run last year to try to make something new and different,” said Coach Jason Gray, in his 25th season and who was named Flint Metro League Coach of the Year. “I take pride in that and am most proud of this team.”
The Lady Martians quest for a state title ended in the high school girls state semifinals on March 17, 2023. The Frankenmuth Eagles defeated the Goodrich Martians 37-30 in the Division 2 MHSAA State Semifinals at the Jack Breslin Event Center on the campus of Michigan State University. The Lady Martians (24-4) fought their way to the state semifinal championship by defeating Yale 60-32, Detroit Country Day 76-71 (3 OT) and Warren Regina in the Division 2 Quarterfinals.
The team has a history of winning, at one point during the 2011-13 season the teams tallied 77 wins in 82 games, including a 2012 perfect season at 28-0.
