GOODRICH- Though the Goodrich Wrestling team was knocked out of contention for the state championships at the district level as a team, they still retained high hopes for some of their individual grapplers.
Five Martian wrestler made it through the rigors, to land a spot in the division III state tournament, brothers Nic and Garrett Higdon, Zach Pyles, Jeff O’Mara and Barrett Johnson. Of the five, four landed among the top eight, earning all-state honors for the 2002-2003 wrestling season.
With the pressure was on, the Martian grapplers did extremely well. Junior Barrett Johnson was the only wrestler of the five to be knocked out of contention early on. He went 0-2 in the tournament at the 189 lbs. weight class.
At 103 lbs., G. Higdon wrestled his way to a fifth place state finish, while N. Higdon, wrestling at 135 lbs, took a seventh place finish.
The highest finishers from Goodrich were O’Mara and Pyles, who each earned a second place finish in their respective weight classes.
