Goodrich schools eye learning opportunities

Goodrich ? From outdoor trails to a state-of-the-art marketing class, Goodrich school officials are looking at new ways for students to learn.
The Goodrich Outdoor Learning Destination at Oaktree Elementary will take advantange of a nature setting and federal funds to educate elementary pupils in an outdoor setting. Reid Elementary will be involved in the program as well, said Reid Principal Paul Minns.
Officials are also eyeing an offer from the Genesee Intermediate School District to train a reading recovery teacher at no cost to the local district.
At the middle school level, an advanced language arts reading program is being explored, along with a literature/writing class in which students read classic and advanced literature, followed by recitation periods for intense discussion and writing, says middle school principal Jerry Lawrason.
In the high school, proposed curriculum changes include a new advanced placement U.S. History course for juniors and seniors, introducing civics/economics to freshmen, and a business marketing class with text materials that high school principal Kenneth Andrzejewski calls ‘state-of-the-art?.
In addition, courses can now be selected online, said Andrzejewski.
Further curriculum discussion and action will take place on the Goodrich Board of Education Jan. 19 meeting, scheduled at 6 p.m. in the community room of Goodrich High School, located at 8029 S. Gale Road.
