Goodrich – The Goodrich School District received the highest mark possible on their Adequate Yearly Progress report as one of three districts in Genesee County to receive an all ‘A? score. The Brandon School District received ‘A? grades at Belle Ann and Harvey Swanson elementaries. The district received ‘B? grades at Burt Elementary, Fletcher Intermediate, the middle school and high school.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is one of the cornerstones of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. In Michigan, it’s a measure of year-to-year student achievement on the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) test for elementary and middle schools or the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) for high schools.
Goodrich School District board president Michael Tripp said AYP has been a constant process for all of the teachers and administrators in their district and it is their consistent efforts that has made the difference.
‘Schools today need to market themselves and this kind of performance helps to keep our school district competitive, so we can attract administrators and students,? Tripp said. ‘This high academic mark means we can compete with private schools.?
Brandon School District director for curriculum, Lori McMahon, was also pleased with the scores.
‘It’s getting tougher each year to make higher marks,? she said. ‘Considering about half the high schools in Oakland County did not make AYP at all’we’re way ahead of the curve.?
