Goodrich softball notches third-place finish at Hudson invite

Goodrich’s varsity team traveled to the western part of the state April 15 and had a successful journey.
The Martians took third place in the Hudson Invitational that day, defeating Hanover-Horton 15-4 in the Martians? third game of the day to clinch that spot. Adrian won first place in the tournament with a victory against Michigan Center.
In their first game of the tournament, the Martians lost an 11-3 contest against eventual champion Adrian. Alyssa Bertrand and Courtney Brejnak each had doubles in the game, while Ally Gamble had two hits.
Tori Morgan took the loss on the mound for Goodrich.
The Martians? bats came alive in the second game of the invitational with a 7-2 win against Blissfield. Megan Smith, Brejnak and Gamble each had two hits, while Kelsey Krych, Sydney Mahalak and Morgan each had a single and an RBI.
Smith was also the winning pitcher for the Martians, striking out six and allowing five hits.
Goodrich’s offense kicked it up another notch in their final game of the day against Hanover-Horton, pounding out 17 hits in the victory.
Krych had two singles, while Mahalak added a single, a triple and three RBI and Tara Garman a single and a triple. Alyssa Bertrand also chipped in for the Martians with a single, a walk and three RBI, while Smith had two singles, a triple and an RBI.
Once again, Smith was the winning pitcher in the contest, allowing five hits and striking out two. Goodrich coach Amy Gall said Smith pitched very well against Hanover-Horton and induced a lot of ground-ball outs.
‘The big thing with her was she kept the ball down,? Gall said of Smith.
In the first game of an April 13 doubleheader against host Byron, the Martians lost a tough contest to the Eagles 4-3 after going ahead 3-0 earlier in the game.
The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game and then took advantage of a Goodrich error to score the winning run in the seventh inning.
Byron pitcher Jade Fulton was also tough on the Martians, striking out 12 Goodrich batters while walking only one.
‘You have to give credit to her,? Gall said of Fulton.
Krych had three hits in the opener (two singles and a triple), while Morgan had two hits and Jenni Brothers had a single and an RBI.
The Martians bounced back in the second game to defeat the Eagles 6-1. Krych had three stolen bases, while Brothers had three hits and two stolen bases and Smith added two hits.
