A combination of athletic excellence and student achievement have paid off for Steve Harlow.
Harlow, a senior at Goodrich High School, was recently selected by the Kiwanis Club of Flint as their Student-Athlete of the Month for October.
A three-year member of the Goodrich varsity boys soccer team, Harlow tallied 18 goals and 15 assists for the Martians as they won the Genesee Area Conference championship and were ranked in the state’s top ten for Division 3 much of the season.
He said he has been interested in soccer ‘since I was probably four,? and has played on the Tri-County Lasers travel team, based out of Linden and Fenton. He was a member of the Goodrich junior varsity boys soccer team his freshman year before making his way to the varsity his sophomore year.
Harlow was also a placekicker on the Martians? football team this season, and said he intends to try out for the Martians? varsity boys basketball team this month.
In addition, he has participated on the Martians? track team for the past three years, specializing in the long jump, hurdles and high jump.
His achievements off the playing field are also significant.
He currently has a 3.9 grade point average and scored 28 on the ACT. In addition, he was a treasurer of the Goodrich National Honor Society in 2005-06 and is a past winner of the Martian Citizenship Award.
Harlow said he has always been able to make sure to balance athletics and academics. ‘I haven’t really had a problem with it,? he said. ‘I make sure I get my stuff done before I go to practice.?
In the future, he hopes to play soccer at the collegiate level, and has mentioned Saginaw Valley State University, Alma College and Albion College as potential candidates. He intends to major in pre-dentistry regardless of what college he attends.
‘I’ve been talking to their coaches,? he said.
