The Oxford wrestlers grappled their way to a 14-0 season mark as they swept all of their opponents at the Oxford Invitational Dec. 30.
Against their opponents, the wrestlers had two shutouts, limited another opponent to only three total points and averaged almost 74 points per match versus their opponent’s-nearly seven points.
Oxford’s smallest margin of victory was 39 points against Durand, a team Wildcats head coach Scott Couch said has state-ranked wrestlers on it.
Results from the invite were as follows:
Oxford 83, Flint Powers Catholic, 0
Oxford 84, Armada 0
Oxford 58, Durand 19
Oxford 65, Imlay City 12
Oxford 78, Novi 3
‘We had guys step up and wrestle tough,? said Couch. ‘Durand and Imlay City are tough teams. We beat some big teams, and we’re very happy with the turnout and are looking forward to March.?
While the team currently is undefeated, Couch urges caution. On Jan. 7, the Wildcats begin Flint Metro League action against Holly, and things don’t get much easier.
‘Holly is very tough throughout, especially in the middle and bottom of their lineup,? Couch said. ‘It’ll be good competition for us.?
On Saturday, Jan. 10, Oxford takes on Detroit Catholic Central.
