Out of 41 teams, the Oxford Wildcat wrestlers placed second, behind Detroit Catholic Central, at the Oakland County Championship Tournament held Dec. 20-21 at Oxford Middle School Fieldhouse.
‘We had several wrestlers do very well as first-time starters in the Varsity-A line up,? said Coach Paul McDevitt. ‘We missed a couple of opportunities to score some points and make it a closer race for the championship.?
Four Wildcats competed in the championship finals.
Alex Hrisopoulos (112) and Zach Wood (285) won titles while Wes Maskill (160) and Eddie Schlickenmeyer (135) finished runner-up.
‘Seniors Zeb Throne (171) and Jamal Pettiford (189) did a nice job placing in the top eight in the county,? McDevitt added.
With a record of 13-3, the team’s schedule looks pretty ‘brutal? over the next few weeks, according to McDevitt, as they head to the Detroit Catholic Central Invitational on Jan. 4, take on Lake Orion and Farmington at home Jan. 8 and wrestle on the road in the Hudson Super 16 Invite on Jan. 18.
‘We should learn a lot about our team during this stretch,? McDevitt added. ‘If we keep working hard and paying attention to details, we could make a deep run in the state tournament in February.?
