Atlas Twp.-The Green Road bridge over the Kearsley Creek, about a mile east of M-15, may be closed indefinitely following an inspection on Dec.13.
Richard Hill, design department manager for the Genesee County Road Commission ordered the bridge, which was constructed in 1938, closed after a Monday meeting with an independent inspector.
‘Right now it’s closed temporarily to all traffic,? said Hill. ‘A bridge load analysis will determine if it can be reopened to accommodate some lower weight vehicles or even if it can be open at all.?
Hill added that repairs to the old bridge will be very costly and may not be completed for many years due to a lack of funding. The Green Road bridge was inspected about two years ago and determined to be strong. Since then, steel beams have been deteriorating and several holes are now apparent, according to the report.
‘For safety reasons, it’s just better to close the bridge’especially for school bus traffic.?
